Hell’s Addiction are a 5-piece balls-out hard rock band from Leicester UK, described as the bastard child of an illicit three-way between Skid Row, early-Guns N’ Roses & AC/DC.
Our drummer, Luke Morley, takes you through the story so far...
So, album No.3… ‘9 O’Clock Horses’ is a massive album for us. Everything we put into this one is ‘all guns out’, we have binned so many amazing riffs and songs because, even after fully writing them, we just thought “nope” that’s not going to cut it! So that what you will be left with is what we will consider a Hell’s Addiction masterpiece. There is a real maturity to this album and a real solid heavy rock sound. The riffs, hooks, and massive singalong choruses will be sure to make this our ‘Slippery When Wet’!
Go back 13 years to our first ever practice as Hell’s Addiction, just Ben, Jay, Liam, and me. In that first ever practice we wrote ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ and ‘Other Side’ which you will find on our first album ‘Raise Your Glass’.
Liam and Jay had played together briefly in other bands and Ben, Liam and I were in a band together just before this one, the new line up just jelled instantly. Jay and I clicked as a solid rhythm section from the get-go, knowing where each other would hit the accent and when to just cruise the song along without even having to look at each other. That laid down a solid base for Liam to riff and solo away and for the first time, Ben got to explore his vocals. This was Ben’s first time being a front man and vocalist!
With ‘Raise Your Glass’ you got raw in your face rock, just all cards on the table rock n roll, no messing, no thinking, just straight out of the head rock.
Then comes along the writing for album No.2 ‘Broken’. We started to realise that there was more to the music of this band and started to write along more of the rock music spectrum with songs like ‘Broken’ (more of a ballad) and ‘Time Has Come’ a more atmospheric, and dynamic rock song. We did this without losing that raw rock edge to the music. The song, ‘The Rocker’, is an example of this. We wrote it as a homage to Motorhead’s legendary Lemmy. This period was the first time we lined up as a 5-piece.
Next up it’s 2016 and two weeks before opening the Download Festival, we lost a guitarist. Fortunately, Liam knew just the man to ask to fill the hole. In steps the guitar maestro Dan Weir. With only three practices and one very brief one with Ben, he hits the stage at download with us for his first ever Hell’s Addiction gig and we instantly knew this was a blessing in disguise!
The ‘Statutory Nuisance EP’ came next. It was our first music written and recorded with Dan. It is easy to see the influence he had on our music, bringing a much more dynamic and more thoughtful song writing process while still delivering that special Hell’s Addiction guitar wall of sound!
Dan and Liam bring out the best in each other’s playing with very different styles that nearly always leads to a dynamic duel of solos in the songs! One of the fans favourite songs ‘We’re On Fire’ came out of this EP and is truly the sound of the band from here onwards. Roaring riffs, solid thumping bass and drums finished off with an almighty thunderous vocal laid on top by Ben!
March 2019. ‘V1.0 EP’ drops and hits no.1 in the Amazon Rock Charts for several weeks and it even hit #7 in the “All Genre” charts competing with top pop acts. Now for this EP we worked on the songs a hell of a lot more than previously. Don’t get me wrong, when we write songs we literally start with a riff, drums and bass just kick in and the song takes off with the band just knowing where to take it. For this EP we would complete the basis of the songs then go back over them and go over each detail until we thought we nailed it and it became the exact piece of music we were all imagining! We had no idea the reaction it would receive, and to be honest, we were massively shocked!
